Precipitation can be recorded using a tipping bucket rain gauge which pulses with an accuracy of 0.2mm of rainfall.  Rainfall can be overlaid onto other parameters being monitored such as soil moisture or ambient humidity.   In addition to realtime rainfall data, a calendar day summary of rainfall is processed at midnight.  All historical data is available should the farmer wish to access historical precipitation records.
